Game Changers: invest in people ánd wildlife in Mozambique.
Together with founding partner NewPort Capital , we are building a new network of investors: Game Changers. With Game Changers we started a challenging project in collaboration with the conservation organisation Peace Parks Foundation around Zinave National Park in Mozambique. The project is desperately needed, as Mozambique is one of the world's poorest countries. More than half of its 33 million people live in poverty, and 9.8 million are malnourished. We are looking for entrepreneurs with guts to join this new network. Being a Game Changer requires courage, the belief that it can be done, and the willingness to accept a challenge. Will you join us?
The challenge.
Zinave National Park is part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area, which is co-managed by Peace Parks. Recently, rewilding made the park the first BIG5 park in Mozambique. Since May 2022, the rhino has returned to the park after a 40-year absence.
At the same time, the local population in this area has above-average poverty and hunger rates, partly because it is a remote area with few amenities and infrastructure. The local people depend for their livelihoods on what they can find in the area. The park's protected status does not make life easy for them, forcing them to resort to poaching and illegal logging. The sustainable survival of Zinave Wildlife Park is only possible if the living conditions of the people living around the park are also improved.
The area is facing even more challenges due to recent extreme weather, the effects of the pandemic and the war in Ukraine. Peace Parks has asked The Hunger Project to join forces to find a solution.
Extreme poverty.
Through a baseline survey conducted in 2022 in the area where we work with Peace Parks, we know what the situation is like. Here are some figures:
- Over 50% of the people in Malindile and Maculuve lives on just $1,25 per day.
- Only 15% of households in Malindile and 23% in Maculuve have access to sanitation.
67% of young people in Malindile and 64% in Maculuve have no education, job or any kind of training.
What we do.
The Hunger Project supports two groups of villages (Malindile and Maculuve) around the Zinave National Park in Mozambique. We do this with a proven approach: the epicentre strategy. We tackle all causes of hunger simultaneously and offer the people in these villages tools to permanently improve their own living conditions within 5 years. We applied the same strategy successfully around the Majete Wildpark in Malawi. Majete has become a thriving park, with the lowest poaching rates in Malawi. For example, no elephants and rhinos have been poached since their reintroduction in 2003 and 2006. And in the first self-reliant epicentre in Majete, hunger dropped dramatically: from 44% to 15%. Also, the number of people who can read and write increased from 23% to 91% (results from the 2018 final evaluation).).
Around the Zinave wildlife park, we are laying the foundations for equal cooperation between the community board, local government and conservationists. Together, we examine how to give residents formal and full participation in park management. So that people and wildlife can both flourish.
The dream.
What makes this project special is that Peace Parks is keen to learn from The Hunger Project's proven approach. The ultimate goal is to scale up our approach with Peace Parks to new areas of operation in Southern Africa.
